R’ Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin has arrived this morning to the Otisville Jail in New York, after he was transferred from the Iowa Prison. He was transferred to this prison to serve his 27 year sentence, as lawyers continue to work to appeal the sentence.
Last month, defense lawyers said they will ask U.S. District Judge Linda Reade to send Rubashkin to the Otisville Federal Correctional Facility in New York state, or the federal prison in Fort Dix, New Jersey. Both are minimum-security prisons that can accommodate Rubashkin’s needs as a Chabad Lubavitch Jew, defense lawyers said.
The Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville is located in Orange County, New York, USA. The federal prison, which opened in 1977, is a medium security facility, located in the Town of Mount Hope a quarter mile from the Otisville Correctional Facility, a New York medium security prison, thus facilitating transfers between systems. It is the only prison in New York State that still utilizes an active horse perimeter patrol.
The prison is collocated with a minimum security prison camp. Both minimum and medium security parts are for male prisoners.
